Sensor-based Mobility / Activity Dataset

We developed a sensor-based activity/action/mobility dataset. The University of Dhaka Mobility Dataset (DU-MD / MD) is a sensor-based human action/activity recognition (HAR) dataset. It has 10 activity classes, and 5000 observations from 50 subjects recorded using wrist-mounted sensors embracing accelerometry. The dataset is continually updated. It exhibits sufficient statistical diversity in physiological parameters and a noteworthy correlation between similar activities with coveted quantitative and qualitative features, suitable for training machine learning models. On the other hand, the wrist-mounted approach parallels the future commercial scenarios. The sensors are specially made in the University of Tokyo. This work is partially based on the results of a project commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

Mobility Dataset

The University of Dhaka mobility data set (DU-MD) is a human action recognition dataset consisting of 10 classes and 5000 observations, recorded using wrist-mounted sensors embracing accelerometry. The data set exhibits sufficient statistical diversity in physiological parameters and a noteworthy correlation between similar activities with coveted quantitative and qualitative features, suitable for training machine learning models. On the other hand, the wrist-mounted approach parallels the future commercial scenarios.

Classification of Locomotion and Transportation Modes Using Smartphone Sensor Data

We explore a smartphone sensor-based benchmark Sussex-Huawei Locomotion-Transportation (SHL) dataset for rich locomotion and transportation analytics. We show a comparison of different sensor-based features for the identification of a specific activity level.

Supervised and Neural Classifiers for Locomotion Analysis

We extract 36 quantitative features per sensor (totalling 226 features) of the dataset provided in the SHL recognition challenge and provides a processing pipeline for training the classifiers embracing parallel computation and out-of-memory processing.

Automatic Fall Detection System for Elederly People

We used smartphones as the main component of our system. A dataset was first established and by analyzing it, an appropriate algorithm was devised. Finally, the algorithm was implemented and the system was tested and fall was detected in real-time.

Modified-Motion History Image-based Action Recognition

We propose a way to better represent MHI, which is immune to noises due to camera movement and motion of unwanted objects. Edge detection of moving objects and finding dominant motion portion are important factors for efficient human action recognition. Finding dominant motion portion is a very challenging task because of the change of background intensity at daylight and movement of camera. We have obtained better MHIs from edge detection. The obtained MHI templates are processed afterwards to find the binary patterns and motion gradient features.

Face Detection in Various Backgrounds, Angles and Distances

We explore face detection in various positions and surroundings, which include distance from the camera, background color, the angle of the object, etc. We perform an analysis in order to find the best settings that are appropriate for Viola-Jones algorithm.

Enhancement of Optical Absorption of Solar Energy

An optimized structure to increase optical absorption of solar energy in elliptical GaAs (Gallium Arsenide) nanowire array solar cell is proposed. We investigate the influence of geometric parameters on the optical absorption of elliptical GaAs nanowire solar cells by exploiting finite difference time domain simulations.

Fatigue Detection Using Facial Landmarks

Detection of fatigue in human face is crucial for medical and safety purposes. Although it is a simple task for a human observer, for a computer, it is a very challenging problem. We explore to determine the presence of fatigue in a face using computer vision. We propose a method for fatigue recognition by exploiting the facial landmarks.

Mobile-based Eye-Blink Detection

We develop a real-time mobile phone-based gaze tracking and eye-blink detection system on Android platform. The system is also extensively experimented with various environments and setups, including variations in illuminations, subjects, gender, angles, processing speed, RAM capacity, and distance. These concepts can be exploited in different applications, e.g., to detect drowsiness of a driver, or to operate the computer cursor to develop an eye-operated mouse for disabled people.

Sensor-based Activity Recognition having Missing Data

Sensor-based activity recognition deteriorates while partial data are lost. Hence, we study activity recognition in the presence of data loss.

One-Shot-Learning Gesture Recognition

Information of motion flow is utilized to calculate the percent change of motion flow for an action in different spatial regions of the frame. The space-time descriptor computed this way from the query video is a measure of the likeness of a gesture in a lexicon. Finally, gesture classification is performed based on correlation based and Euclidean distance based classifiers.

Spectral Domain Features-based Action Recognition

An action recognition scheme is developed based on extracting spectral features from the frames of a video sequence using the two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (2D-DFT). We also explore Wavelet. The proposed spectral feature selection algorithm offers the advantage of very low feature dimensionality and thus lower computational cost. We show that using frequency (or Wavelet) domain features enhances the distinguishability of different actions, resulting in high within-class compactness and between-class separability of the extracted features, while certain undesirable phenomena, such as camera movement and change in camera distance, are less severe in the frequency domain. Principal component analysis is performed to further reduce the dimensionality of the feature space.

Study on Abandoned Object Detection

To detect abandoned and stolen objects, the focus is to determine static regions that have recently changed in the scene by performing background subtraction. The time and presence of static objects, which may be either abandoned or stolen, are marked on the video feed and may be used to alert security personnel.

Face Recognition-based Real-time System for Surveillance

The process is broken into two steps: face detection and face recognition to identify particular persons. For the first step, the system tracks and selects the faces of the detected persons. An efficient recognition algorithm is then used to recognize detected faces with a known database. The proposed approach exploits the Viola-Jones method for face detection, the Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi algorithm as a feature tracker and Principal Component Analysis for face recognition.

Pedestrian Activity Database and Classification

A view-based spatio-temporal template formation scheme is proposed for pedestrian activity classification. It emphasizes on detailed classification of the entire wide range of pedestrian actions in the context of road crossing and their recognition from a viewpoint of a static car in the traffic signal. For this purpose, we develop a new pedestrian action dataset containing 160 videos of eight actions with twenty subjects per action.

Two-Person Interactions

We propose a technique to recognize two-person interactions based on a benchmark dataset from University of Texas, Austin called UT interaction Dataset. The task is challenging due to variations in motion, dynamic background, recording settings and interpersonal differences. Our technique includes concatenated Motion History Images (cMHI). The produced cMHI templates are incorporated with Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) to develop smart feature vector for each class.

Gait Analysis

Gait recognition and analysis are very crucial research areas in the field of computer vision for various applications. A simple approach for gait analysis is advised on the motion energy image and gradient-based optical flow computation.

Clustered Flow Vector-based Action Recognition

By exploiting optical flow and random sample consensus (RANSAC) method, an action recognition method is proposed. From the remaining salient key interest points, the area of the human body within the frame is estimated. The rectangular area surrounding the human body is then segmented both horizontally and vertically. Now, the percentage of change of interest points in each horizontal and vertical segments from frame to frame is estimated.

Visual Face Scanning and Emotion Perception Analysis of Autistic Children

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex and diverse neuro-developmental condition. The smooth pursuit experiment contains animations of objects moving horizontally across the screen and the saccadic tests contained animations of predictable and non-predictable saccades. To attain the gaze data, Tobii EyeX Controller is used and the data is processed and analyzed.

Action Recognition from Accelerometer Sensor Data

Elderly people are physically very weak. Most of them have to consult doctors regularly. It is tedious for both the elderly persons and doctors to stay in touch incessantly. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is designed to keep incessant observations remotely on elderly people at a time. This WSN is comprised of many sensor nodes. For the recognition of elderly actions, accelerometer sensors are broadly used in WSN.

Determination of Consciousness of Automotive Drivers Using Eye Blink Detection

Traffic accident due to driver's unconsciousness has become a major concern recently. We monitor the loss of attention of automotive drivers. We explore several methods to detect the loss of attention of drivers.

Activity Recognition by Using LoRaWAN Sensor

We explore LoRaWAN (LoRa Wide Area Network) sensor for human activity recognition. To support the ageing population in the world, assisted living and sensor-based human activity recognition are important research areas. In this research, we study LoRaWAN sensors data transfer ability in a real caregiving center in Japan.

Sleep Monitoring System

Sleep monitoring is very crucial for human being since insufficient and unbalanced sleeps are often related to an individual's health state. Sleep posture impacts the quality of sleep, and it is exclusively vital for injured people. So, it is essential to study the postures and movements of the limbs during sleeping. We propose a sleep monitoring system based on ultrasonic sensors. Our system does not need any on-body sensors to wear, nor does it need any kind of additional action from the users outside the daily routine.

Development of an 8DOF Quadruped Robot

Quadruped robots can mimic animal walking gait and they have certain advantages like walking on terrain and extremely rough surfaces. A quadruped robot is designed and developed having six different movements: front, back, left, right walking, clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation.

Left Ventricular (LV) Segmentation on Cardiac Cine-MR Images

We explore segmentation algorithms applied on left ventricular (LV) segmentation on cardiac cine-MR images. The dataset used for this research is cardiac MRI dataset used for MICCAI 2009's 3-D segmentation challenge for clinical application (Sunnybrook Cardiac dataset used for the 2009 MICCAI's challenge).

Study on Alzheimer's Disease from the Ventricular Enlargement using S-MRI Data

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major form of dementia that is generally diagnosed using clinical history and brain imaging. Structural MRI provides the opportunity to identify the changes in the brain structure. Brain ventricular enlargement is a biomarker for the AD subjects. Due to intra- and inter-operator variability, manual detection of this enlargement is predisposed to errors. An automatic detection of this enlargement is presented.

A Study on Routing Protocol in Ad hoc Network for Daily Activities of Elderly Living

We introduce a method that uses an algorithm based on Ad hoc routing protocol to optimize the data transfer from source to destination in a wireless network route.
