Bangladesh has a long coast line, extending from the Sundarbans in Khulna to Teknaf in Chittagong. With about one-fifth of the population lives in it, the coastal region of Bangladesh. Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest of the world and an UNESCO recognized world natural heritage site. Next is the riverine coast of the Barisal division with flood and tidal plains, followed by Meghna estuary through which the combined flow of the Ganges, the Brahmaputra, and the Meghna Rivers reaches the Bay of Bengal, sustaining the most active delta formation process in the world. Chittagong coastline, where the sea shore is only a short distance away from the hills. Next, Cox's Bazar beach and Teknaf. The coastal and maritime environment of Bangladesh now faces many challenges, aggravated by the climate change, whose damaging consequences are already apparent. The sea level is rising, submerging more of the coastal land. Drastic reduction of the Padma flow, due to diversion of water by India through Farakka barrage and other upstream river intervening structures, has led to drying up of its distributaries that used to provide fresh water to the coastal regions of Khulna and Barisal, including the Sundarbans. The ecology of the whole area is under threat. Plans of building large coal-fired power plants close to it are a big concern for Sunderbans. Ship breaking, ship building, unplanned tourism and shrimp cultivation are big concerns. These show that Bangladesh's coastal and marine environmental issues have now acquired a larger significance. Time has become to consider all the coastal and marine environment issues to be considered together, focusing on the interrelationships among them, and to formulate an integrated strategy for environmentally sustainable development of coastal and marine Bangladesh. This conference has been called with that basic goal in mind.
OBJECTIVES:
- Draw national attention to the special problems of Bangladesh's coastal and marine environment.
- Bring together national, regional, and international experts and activists working on issues of Bangladesh's coastal and marine environment and related issues.
- Formulate recommendations for effectively dealing with Bangladesh's coastal and marine environmental issues.
- Connect policy makers with the information, analysis and recommendations.
- Examine these coastal & marine environmental issues from a complete perspective.
